Advice on Learning How to Delegate

One of the better time-management books I’ve seen says: Just because you own the business, does not mean you have to do all the work.

But Jennifer Whiter, the author of “Work Less, Make More,” says that delegating doesn't mean just dumping a project on an employee. You have to train someone to do the work to your standard, she says. If you delegated to the right person, they may actually do the task better than you, she writes.

In the book, Ms. Whiter says the mistake many owners make as they expand is not upgrading their resources to support new activities.

The book advises entrepreneurs to break the adrenaline habit because being all charged up all the time prevents people from seeing what’s going on around them and leads to missed opportunities.

To reduce adrenaline addiction, Ms. Whiter advises giving up caffeine and sugar, leave 15 minutes early for every appointment -- and stop meeting people after 1 p.m. to give yourself time to slow down before you go home. One reason you can feel exhausted when you get home is because you’ve been keyed up on adrenaline all day.
